A Bird And A Firefly
(Iqbal’s
Ek Parinda Aur Jugnu)
In the evening a songbird,
Sitting on a twig was singing,
It saw
a glittering object on the ground,
The bird flew taking it to be a firefly,
The
firefly said: ‘O the songbird!
Don’t
sharpen thy greedy bill for a helpless!
One Who gave thee tweet and fragrance to
flower,
The
same Allah gave me glitter,
I am
attired in the attire of light,
I am
the Mount Sinai of the world of insects,
If thy
tweet is pleasing to ears,
My
shine too is pleasing to eyes,
Allah
blessed my wings with shine,
He
gave thee the pleasing tweet,
He
taught thy bill how to sing,
He
made me the torch of garden,
He
bestowed on me glitter, on thee singing,
He made
me to burn, made thee to soothe’,
Burning never opposes soothing,
In the
world grief follows affluence,
These
two provide balance in world of existence,
These
two cause manifestation of rise and fall,
Harmony causes the human society to thrive,
Harmony causes spring in garden to flourish.
